CFS TIPS PARTY INVITE

To develop and implement a plan and program to help member senior citizens obtain services they need to remain in their homes as long as possible.
Clifton/Fairfax Station
Transition in Place Services

Mission Statement:

There are many senior citizens (60 and older) in the Clifton-Fairfax Station area who are experiencing some difficulty doing all the things necessary to remain in their homes or who are concerned about being able to stay where they are as they age.

Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and some parts of Fairfax County already have increasing numbers of persons who are prematurely moving to retirement communities having independent living or assisted living capabilities. Without support for our aging residents of Clifton and Fairfax Station, we could experience the same phenomenon.

CFS TIPS has recently been established as a Charitable 501(C)(3) nonprofit organizatio to develop and implement a plan and program that would be modeled, to some extent, after Beacon Hill Village program in Boston. The Beacon Hill Village program directly or indirectly helps member senior citizens
obtain services they need to remain in their homes, provides information on reliable contractors, and promotes wellness and social and cultural activities that are important to seniors.   TIPS will begin Phase I of a three phased plan, offering limited contractor and provider referrals in January 2009. TIPS will start with a manageable set of services and information and build from that to provide what our users say is most needed. The list below contains a list of eventual services we plan to provide during Phase III, the date for which has not yet been determined.

The program will target senior citizens who live in the “downzoned” area generally south of Braddock Road between Union Mill Road and Ox Road (Route 123). We have selected this area for the program initially to keep it to a manageable size and because the absence of neighborhoods with other houses nearby can contribute to the sense of isolation and difficulty remaining in their homes for aging members of our community. As we develop the program, we will consider expanding it to others, including those with disabilities, in the area who need some of the services provided but who are not seniors.

By providing screened and proven provider services to the elderly residents, they will be more confident in remaining in their homes. We anticipate that this program will become a local model that groups in other parts of Fairfax County can use to develop similar initiatives. We will gladly teach and share information and work with the County and other groups so that the program can be replicated elsewhere.

We want to make Clifton and Fairfax Station an area where our aging citizens feel comfortable and more confident of staying in their homes with some support instead of being pressured to move. We will use an extensive network of homeowners associations to communicate with seniors in the area to get their input as we plan and develop the program.

We will use subscriptions and fees for those enrolled in the program to provide much of the funding that will be needed. We also will solicit sustainable outside funding sources, similar to what has been done with the Beacon Hill Village program (major and local donors, foundations, strategic partners, individuals, and businesses) to cover costs not fully supported by subscriptions and fees and to be able to provide assistance to those on limited incomes who are unable to afford the customary fees.
